As with most automotive giants that own and run several different brands, Volkswagen Group shares many of the components it uses between these marques. From the whole vehicle platform to smaller bits like the windshield wipers and interior switches, many parts are used across various models to help save on development and build costs. A good example of this is the foundations used for the world-famous VW Golf, which are shared not only with its Jetta sedan sibling, but also with models built by sister brands SEAT and Škoda.
As far as Škoda is concerned, its first-gen Octavia sedan started in life this way. The brand recently shined the light on one of the highest mileage examples of the breed ever recorded, illustrating just what the vehicle was capable of.
The Octavia Was Volkswagen Group’s Budget-Friendly Sedan
Towards the end of the 1990s, Volkswagen Group had grown to become one of the largest automotive groups in the world. It achieved this by acquiring several new manufacturers, such as the Spanish SEAT and Czech Škoda brands, the latter being one of the oldest automakers in the world. These brands were repurposed to build cars that utilized technology pulled from Audi and Volkswagen, but at differing price points. Škoda was placed at the lower end of the market, with its models marketed as being dependable and affordable beyond all else.
The Octavia was a mid-size sedan, but it didn’t use the underpinnings of the VW Passat. It was instead constructed on the PQ34 A4 platform, which was used for models such as the Golf and Jetta. Beyond this, models like the Audi TT coupe and A3 hatchback, SEAT Leon, and even the new Beetle also utilized it.

The Octavia Was Larger Than Its Platform Siblings
Wanting the Octavia to cut it as a family sedan, the company created it to be bigger than the likes of the Golf. The model ended up being a full five inches longer than the hatchback to increase cabin space, although it was still a good eight inches shorter than the Passat. Under the hood, the Octavia was available with a range of trusty Volkswagen Group gasoline- and diesel-fueled powerplants. One of these engines, the 2.0-liter inline-four, the largest in the range, achieved an impressive feat decades later.
One Of The Highest-Mileage Octavias Has Well Over 600,000 Miles On The Clock
In Volkswagen Group circles, the diesel-powered PD range of engines tends to get most of the love when it comes to reliability. They are known regularly to exceed 200,000 miles and can be tuned considerably beyond their stock output, as shown by the Fabia RS. As it turns out, some of the group’s gas powerplants are equally durable. This sentiment is reflected by an Octavia once owned by an Icelandic sheep farmer by the name of Jomundur Olason, which came with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood.
He first acquired the car in 2003 for his wife, before he then took it over as his main workhorse in 2007. He ended up using the car for years, with the vehicle eventually managing to reach a stunning 621,000 miles, or 1 million kilometers. Hitting this milestone eventually became a target for him, as he wanted to see what happened when the vehicle’s odometer moved past the 999,999 kilometer mark. As it wasn’t designed to do so, this number simply remained visible, with the Octavia’s true mileage unknown beyond this point.
The Octavia Covered All Of These Miles In Iceland
Olason was able to cover so many miles in his time with the Octavia because he frequently traveled from his home to his farm in it, as well as going on lots of sightseeing trips around his homeland. The car wasn’t only used to get to his farm either, but also to complete jobs around the place. This involved piloting the sedan on rough gravel and dirt tracks that it wasn’t designed to tackle, though the machine pushed on with very little in the way of complaining.
He even transported sheep in the back of the sedan on occasion, so Olason gave it far from an easy time. Despite this, his Octavia managed to achieve its amazing mileage feat on the original engine, gearbox, and clutch.
Olason Gave The Octavia A Hard Time, But Ensured It Was Prepared To Do So
You likely won’t be surprised to learn that Olason didn’t simply jump behind the wheel of the Octavia and hope for the best. He was careful to ensure that the engine and drivetrain were maintained on a regular basis. Speaking to Škoda via its Škoda World outlet, Olason explained that not only did he meticulously preserve the vehicle, but that he also drove it with extreme mechanical sympathy.
Routine maintenance is essential. You must keep an eye on things like shock absorbers, radiators, and brakes. Driving style also matters – I was always careful not to over-rev the engine. I never pushed it beyond 3,000 rpm. I also only used high-quality oil and changed it roughly every 30,000 kilometers.
The High-Mileage Octavia Illustrates How Important Maintenance Is
Olason’s well-used Octavia, which is still in action today as a specimen for Icelandic automotive engineering students to learn about the mechanics of cars, provides a good lesson in how to look after a vehicle. It’s especially important for those on a tight budget, as if you tend to your pride and joy the way Olason did, your vehicle could keep on acting as a trusty workhorse for years or even decades to come. Aside from regular maintenance, there are several other key ways to prolong the life of your car.
A VW Beetle Once Eclipsed One Million Miles, Though Its Journey Wasn’t Straightforward
While the Octavia’s feat is ultra-impressive, a 1963 VW Beetle managed to tear past the 1 million mile mark in the hands of its owner, with the vehicle eventually retired to a museum, having covered an astonishing 1,613,281 miles. The car was purchased by Albert Klein back in ’63, and he loved driving it so much that he would drive as much as 80 miles in the wrong direction, simply to prolong his commute home.
Later in life, he became determined to break the world record for having the world’s highest mileage car, which stood at 1.18 million miles. Having averaged over 40,000 miles a year, he eventually claimed the record and covered a further half a million miles before eventually retiring it to become a museum piece in 1994. Like Olason, Klein made sure to continually maintain the vehicle, and he spent around $38,000 on the car over the years. This included a total of seven engines, three transmissions, and 150 tires. Considering the Octavia managed its feat on its original components, it’s tough to argue that the Czech hero isn’t the moral winner here, however.
