Ford Offers Mustang GTD Dealers $15k Per Sale, Does Not Forbid Markups

Key Takeaways

  • Ford guarantees dealers $15,000 for each Mustang GTD sold by dealers.
  • Ford does not appear to be discouraging GTD markups.
  • Ford will offer a concierge service for the $300k+ limited edition.

Ford has reportedly informed dealers that it will guarantee them a payment of $15,000 for each example of the Mustang GTD they sell. According to a report from Cars Direct, the Mustang GTD will be offered with a “concierge” service because Ford wants to “create a convenient, seamless, and customized experience for both customers and dealerships.” Those with the clout and cash to buy one of these limited-production vehicles will be able to buy from their chosen dealer, while the concierge service is said to be “in place to assist the dealer in providing the specialized attention that customers expect.”

Considering the Mustang GTD will start at “approximately $300,000,” it’s no surprise that the Blue Oval expects to attract an unusual sort of clientele – the sort that expects champagne and caviar, not Coke and crisps.

Mustang GTD Will Be Invoiced At MSRP

The report adds that Ford’s letter to dealers says the Mustang GTD will be invoiced to them at MSRP. Typically, a dealer is invoiced at a lower price than the MSRP to provide that dealer with a profit margin, but with this particular car, a dealer that sells a GTD “will receive a flat payment of $15,000 upon successful delivery” – the same sort of process that the Blue Oval employed with the Ford GT supercar.

In several cases, people paid more than a 100% markup.

This could suggest that Ford is trying to prevent markups, but the letter reportedly does not forbid or even discourage dealer markups. In recent times, we’ve seen outrageous markups that sometimes exceed 100%. Since the Mustang GTD was revealed in August 2023, Ford has not said exactly how many examples will be produced, but given that production will be limited and that the GTD represents many firsts for the brand and the nameplate, it’s safe to say that it will be highly sought after.

Expect Markups

In recent years, markups have ballooned, whether we’re talking about a family vehicle like the Kia Telluride or a sports car like the Nissan Z Nismo. In the case of the latter, we’ve seen markups as high as $90,000, and similar increases have been applied to Corvette Z06 window stickers. The rarer and pricier the car, the worse the markup seems to get – we’ve even come across a $250k markup for the Porsche 911 Sport Classic. The Mustang GTD is going to be just as special as these examples, if not more so. In terms of performance, it’s aiming for a sub-7-minute Nurburgring lap, while fashion-conscious buyers can order it in literally any color.

If that $15,000 payment is meant to deter markups, we highly doubt it will work, but we’ve asked Ford for greater clarity and will update this article with any response we receive.
