Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that protectionism will have no future and overstretching the concept of “de-risking” will only lead to greater risks.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib in Beijing, who accompanied Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on his visit to China.

China is committed to building a market-oriented, rule-of-law and internationalized business environment, welcomes enterprises from all countries to invest and do business in China, and is willing to strengthen cooperation with European countries in areas such as green development and coping with climate change, Wang said.

In terms of China-Belgium ties, Wang said that the steady, healthy and positive momentum of the relationship is attributed to the fact that the two sides have always respected and understood each other and continued to expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, which has brought important benefits to the two peoples and injected stability into China-EU relations.

The Chinese foreign minister said that he is willing to strengthen communication with his Belgian counterpart and jointly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries to promote China-Belgium ties to a new level.
