Sadly, the larger motor was plagued with problems and the more prominent car companies emerged victorious. This was the same year the Ford GT40 bested its Italian counterpart, which is probably why the A220 has been lost to the history books. Defeated but not destroyed, Redele would return the following year with four improved A220s. Sadly, all four failed to complete the challenging endurance race.
But even that wasn’t enough to get Redele down. He would chop the longtail off the A220, creating a shorttail model with moveable aerodynamic parts. While Alpine never found success at Le Mans, it did give the world something beautiful. Zagato is now sharing that with 19 lucky customers, and we hope they share this beauty with the world by driving their special machines.
The Twin Tail will officially debut in May, likely at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Before then, the car will be displayed at The ICE St. Moritz event, taking place February 23-24.
