What’s cooler than driving a BMW M2? Driving a BMW M2 with centerlock wheels. Unfortunately for American Bimmer patrons, the race car-inspired M Performance part was only offered on the Old Continent when it was introduced in 2023. However, the German marque has changed its mind and confirmed that it’s now available in North America, but you must really want one to get one for your M car.

According to BMWBlog, the centerlock wheels (coded 963M) will cost owners around $19,995.23. While the hubs themselves are priced at $11,037.90, the total cost, including installation, is jacked up by dealer labor and specialized tools. The required tools include a release tool, Sythes Glep 1 grease, Wuerth Al 1100 aluminum paste, a centerlock wheel socket, and a torque wrench capable of measuring up to 738 lb-ft. BMW said before that 685 lb-ft of torque is required to tighten the single lug nut.

So far, Ford has been the only one to explore the possibility of a center-lock hub without the need for special tools, so there’s no way to get around these prices. They are certainly steep, considering that there are plenty of used sporty cars you can buy under $20,000, and that a brand-new Nissan Versa will cost you less than a set of BMW centerlock wheels. Then again, this would be an apples-to-oranges comparison, and a disservice to the joy the BMW M2 could bring to the table, especially when you see it equipped with a fairly exotic part.

BMW’s new centerlock wheels aren’t only applicable to the M2. All G8X M cars, including the M3 sedan and the M4 coupe, can be fitted with the 963M set. Outside the US, the M3 Touring forbidden fruit can also benefit from the added pizzazz of the expensive performance part. BMW’s M Performance Part catalog for North America hasn’t listed the 963M wheels yet as of this writing.
Not Every Rich Bimmer Fan Can Get Them
Apart from the cool factor, center-locking wheels have benefits, especially for those frequenting the track (provided they have a pit crew). They make tire changes a cinch, while some may claim less rotational mass – though some may contend this due to the expected additional weight of the stronger (and therefore thicker) center-locking nuts.
