All-Wheel Drive
With the highest BuzzScore of 8.8 out of 10, the top luxury hybrid SUV is the Lexus NX; it sits below the slightly-larger Lexus RX. Overall, the NX has a dozen trims, with four powertrains shared among them for a diverse selection to suit everybody’s needs. With that being said, though, the first hybrid powertrain is found in the NX 350h AWD, which starts at $45,425 before the destination charge. Powering this version is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid that makes a combined 240 horsepower. As for fuel economy, the 350h AWD gets 41/37/39 mpg city/highway/combined.
The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid also has a 2.5L engine, but manages 304 hp combined for better acceleration. This model can also cover 37 miles on electric power alone.
The NX 450h+ deals well with the worst Californian roads can dish out, despite the 21-inch wheels with summer tires. The steering is fine for around town and on the freeway, and cabin noise is wonderfully minimal. For everyday driving and road trips, the NX 450h+ F Sport is a pleasure to eat up the miles in and wait out traffic jams with.

Volvo makes a couple of the best luxury hybrid SUVs, starting with the XC60 Plug-In Hybrid with a BuzzScore of 8.6 out of 10. The XC60 PHEV follows the rest of the Volvo lineup with modern and simple styling, but doesn’t lack in luxury. The interior, while not overflowing with stylistic details, still feels premium and fits the needs of a luxury car. It starts at $58,050 before destination and other fees. Under the hood is a surprisingly powerful 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder plug-in hybrid that makes a combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft. It gets up to 35 miles of electric range, and manages 28 mpg/63 MPGe combined.

When considering luxury hybrid SUVs, BMW instantly comes to mind with the X5 Hybrid. Among the various trims of the X5, the hybrid version fits right in with the same level of luxury, plentiful comfort features, and a smooth, yet powerful driving experience.
The X5 Hybrid starts at $73,800 for the only trim available, the xDrive50e. Under the hood is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder PHEV that makes a combined 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. While it’s a classic BMW at heart, it’s the polar opposite of this other hybrid BMW SUV.

Is the BMW X5 Hybrid worth an extra $5,000 for someone who drives less than 7,000 miles a year?
The 2025 BMW X5 lineup has the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e with an MSRP of $73,100, which is 5k more than the xDrive40i. It seems like a good deal, as the hybrid has more power (483 hp vs 375 hp) and has an all-electric driving range of 40 miles, with gas mileage estimates of 58 MPGe (vs. 25 mpg for the xDrive40i). But is that worth it if you drive less than 7,000 miles a year? Assuming the low mileage means shorter trips, the X5 hybrid can be treated like an EV if you’re willing to recharge daily or every second day, meaning you can save plenty on fuel compared to the xDrive40i’s annual estimate of $1,200. But we want to know whether you think it’s a good deal or whether you should just get the cheaper combustion-only model. What do you think?

Another great hybrid luxury SUV from Lexus with a BuzzScore of 8.6 out of 10 is the Lexus RX. This is another Lexus with a variety of trims to choose from, including the RX 500h F-Sport Performance that baffles us. The RX fits somewhere between the BMW X3 and X5 in terms of size. Starting the hybrid lineup off is the RX 350h AWD at $51,425. The hybrid powertrains include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid that makes a combined 246 hp, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid that makes 304 hp combined, or a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder hybrid that makes a combined 366 hp.

2L I4 Hybrid
The only other German SUV on our list is the Audi Q5 Plug-In Hybrid. This luxurious hybrid SUV is a great alternative to the standard gas-powered Q5, but doesn’t compromise on features. In fact, it excels in every area the normal Q5 does, in addition to having more power than the base model, and it has better fuel economy. The only issue with choosing this over the gas model is the price: the Q5 Plug-In Hybrid starts at $58,500. For that price, though, you get a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder PHEV that makes 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It also gets 26 mpg/58 MPGe combined, plus it can cover well over 20 miles on electricity alone.

Among the best luxury hybrid SUVs with smaller proportions is the Lexus UX, although we still have to rate the latest model, which received a bump up in power. To be specific, there are four versions of the UX—all variations of the 300h—that start at $36,540 before destination and other fees. All four trims are powered by the same 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder hybrid that makes a net combined 196 horsepower. It’s not designed for speed – not even the F Sport trim – but all-wheel-drive models can get from 0-60 mph in about 7.9 seconds. The main reason to consider a UX is because of its city-friendly size and reasonable fuel economy. FWD versions get 43 mpg combined.

Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid
2025 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid
- MSRP
-
$71,900
- Engine
-
2L I4 Hybrid
While the last Volvo we mentioned is still a great luxury hybrid SUV, the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid is larger and more luxurious with a price to match. Even though it was refreshed recently, and fits more features into a bigger body, the XC90 doesn’t stray from Volvo’s simple design language. The PHEV version starts at $74,295 for the 2025.5 refresh. Powering it is the Volvo T8 AWD powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder hybrid that makes 455 horsepower. Despite carrying the same powertrain as the XC60 PHEV, it gets slightly decreased electric range and fuel economy; the XC90 PHEV can drive 32 miles on electric power, and gets 27 mpg combined.
The T8 plug-in hybrid has the benefit of an e-motor on the rear axle, capable of getting the XC90 to highway speeds and beyond without using a drop of gas, minimizing the load on the internal combustion engine and sparing occupants from enduring the gravelly tones of the four-pot under duress. There’s plenty of punch here, but with no mechanical connection between the front and rear axles (the ICE drives the front axle and the e-motor drives the rear), heavier throttle loads result in an undesirable jerk as the ICE springs to life in hybrid mode.

Characteristics Of Luxury Hybrid And Plug-In Hybrid SUVs
Covering both the premium and eco-friendly designation, the best luxury hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUVs have the following characteristics:
- Powertrain: Whether hybrid or plug-in, these vehicles have electric assistance to lower fuel consumption and emissions and – in some cases – increase performance over regular gas models. In comparison, luxury hybrid SUVs get better mpg ratings, have impressive outputs, and are supremely capable.
- Off-road capable: In this segment, AWD is often standard to provide superior traction and imbue these premium vehicles with off-roading prowess. Being luxurious and elegant doesn’t mean they can’t take the road less traveled.
- Classy interior: Luxury hybrid SUVs are crafted with the purpose of being serene and comfortable places to spend time, so expect the highest-quality cabins with loads of soft-touch materials and ample space for passengers. Whether on the small side of the spectrum or as full-size SUVs, occupants will get enough space to sit comfortably for extended periods of time.
- Drive and handling: Not only should the premium hybrid SUV be comfortable for passengers in terms of seating and space, but bumps and vibrations will be kept to a minimum while exterior noise will be mitigated as far as possible. For the driver, the experience should be pleasant too. Adaptive air suspension is common in this category.
- Price: Luxury items, top-notch materials, and cutting-edge technology don’t come cheap, so expect vehicles in this segment to cost you quite a bit. With leading brands competing for top honors, though, you’ll be getting value for money – and saving some at the pumps.
- Safety and convenience: For the price you pay, luxury hybrids come well-equipped with features. From driver assists and advanced collision mitigation to keep you safe to heating and ventilation on the seats to ensure your comfort, the specification list will be extensive. This also means you can expect impressive safety reviews.
