General Motors has officially announced that 2026 will see a Cadillac team running in the Formula 1 series. The company announced an agreement with TWG Global that will have Cadillac becoming the first new F1 team since 2016 and the eleventh team to take part in the series.
Cadillac
Cadillac is a luxury automotive brand that is a part of General Motors. Founded in 1902, it has a long history as a premium luxury brand. Its current lineup includes both sedans and SUVs with a variety of propulsion systems, including a growing number of electric vehicles. In addition to luxury, Cadillac also focuses on performance, particularly with its V-Series vehicles.
In addition, General Motors is creating an F1 power unit that should set Cadillac up to build its own vehicles and power units by the end of the decade. It’s an ambitious goal that, if successful, will bring the brand to a global audience. It will also help Cadillac move its technologies into the future.
Driving Cadillac Innovation
The creation of this F1 program will help with the development of technologies that could find their way into Cadillac’s production vehicles. No, you won’t be careening through the neighborhood in something designed entirely for F1, but you will be able to take advantage of a wide range of technologies used on those vehicles. This includes electrification, software, and gas engine advancements. It’s all a matter of leveraging its experience in F1 to develop new cars for the consumer, from the Escalade to the Lyriq. and the ultra-luxurious Celestiq.

“We’re excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Global’s motorsports businesses. “Together, we’re assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world. We appreciate FIA and FOM’s support of our application and their recognition of the value we can bring to the championship.’’
The Guidance Of A Champion
The endeavor will include the guidance of a rather well-known name with American F1 Champion Mario Andretti serving on the team board as director. “My first love was Formula 1 and now – 70 years later – the F1 paddock is still my happy place. I’m absolutely thrilled with Cadillac, Formula 1, Mark Walter, and Dan Towriss,”
“To still be involved at this stage of my life – I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.” – Mario Andretti
GM first announced its intent to join F1 back in January 2023. In the two years since, it has worked to assemble the perfect team for the job. This includes experts in aerodynamics, chassis and component development, software, and vehicle dynamics. Those experts are located in the US in Indiana, North Carolina, and Michigan, as well as in Silverstone, England.
