Honda Passport Generations: All Model Years

Honda Passport model years technically span 30 years, though the Passport did go on hiatus between 2002 and 2018. In 1993, the first of the three current Honda Passport generations debuted as a badge-engineered Isuzu Rodeo. Looking to cash in on the burgeoning SUV segment at the time, this partnership made sense for Honda as it did not yet have its own SUV. These would be the only Honda Passport models to offer a four-cylinder engine.

The second-gen Passport arrived for the 1998 model year with a refreshed design and a more powerful V6 engine. After disappearing for around 15 years, the third-generation Honda Passport returned in 2019 as a unibody crossover sharing a platform with the automaker’s Pilot SUV. It featured a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a nine-speed automatic, the same configuration that has powered all Passport models since. A comprehensive mid-cycle overhaul was unveiled in 2022 with a second facelift applied in 2024 to keep the Passport fresh until the all-new 2026 model arrives.

For the 2024 model year only, Honda mildly updated the third-gen Passport with a revised cabin featuring a larger center console, a new range-topping Black Edition to replace the Elite trim line, and an improved TrailSport variant. The V6 carried over with no changes.

Featuring all-terrain rubber for the first time, the 2024 Passport TrailSport also received an off-road tuned suspension. Diffused Sky Blue paint became an option exclusive to this trim line and special Pewter-finished 18-inch wheels were standard.

2022-2023 Honda Passport 3rd Gen (YF7/YF8) Facelift

Though the 3.5L V6 engine remained unchanged for the facelifted 2022 Honda Passport, it did receive updated styling that evokes the more rugged Ridgeline pickup truck. This also marked the arrival of the TrailSport off-road focused Passport with model-specific bumpers, cosmetic skid plate inserts, and unique orange-colored touches throughout.

Honda dropped the Sport and Touring trim lines for the 2022 Passport, leaving just the EX-L, TrailSport, and Elite. For the 2023 model year, all-wheel drive became standard across the Honda Passport lineup.

2019-2021 Honda Passport 3rd Gen (YF7/YF8)

Sharing a name with the mid-90s Honda Passport, the all-new 2019 model was an entirely different SUV. Now sharing a platform with the unibody Pilot and its front-wheel-drive architecture, the third-gen Passport was a soft-roader with the option for AWD and a modicum of off-road capability.

The new Passport is a more personal, powerful and off-road-capable SUV that hits the sweet spot between daily driving comfort and weekend off-road, all-weather adventure capability.

It came solely with a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 good for 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque paired with a nine-speed automatic. With a 5,000-pound tow rating, an eight-inch central touchscreen, and room for five across two rows of seats, the 2019 Passport was aimed squarely at competitors like the Nissan Murano and Ford Edge.

1998-2002 Honda Passport 2nd Gen (CK58/CM58/DM58)

For the second-generation Passport production, Honda took two inches out of the wheelbase, added an inch to the overall length, and applied a more aerodynamic design to the body. The four-cylinder engine from the earlier models was discontinued, making the 3.2L V6 standard.

Honda added a second camshaft and increased output to 205 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Anti-lock brakes and rack-and-pinion steering also became standard equipment on these late 90s Passports. For model year 2000, an upscale EX-L model joined the lineup with leather upholstery and two-tone exterior paint.

1994-1997 Honda Passport 1st Gen (C58)

The original Honda Passport was a lightly rebadged Isuzu Rodeo. Featuring body-on-frame construction and rear-wheel drive with the option for four-wheel drive featuring a dual-range transfer case, these first-gen Passports were dramatically different from today’s models.

The Passport lives up to Honda’s rep for quality and reliability. It also gives Honda entree to one of the most lucrative segments of the U.S. auto market, that place where Jeeps, Isuzu Troopers, Ford Explorers and Chevy Blazers roam.

The base DX trim came with a 120-hp 2.6L inline-four that paired with a five-speed manual. Moving up into the LX and EX models unlocked access to the 3.2L V6 with its 175-hp output (190 hp on later models) and optional four-speed automatic transmission. For 1997, the four-cylinder engine was discontinued.
