Jeep Grand Cherokee Competitors You Can Buy In 2025

The Jeep brand is synonymous with off-road ability and rugged performers, and the Grand Cherokee is one of our favorites in the stable. It’s a great blend of style and family-friendly practicality while also being able to complete trail pursuits and adventures. But the midsize SUV market has become increasingly saturated in recent years – so what if you wanted something different? We’ve looked at some Jeep Grand Cherokee competitors to help you make the right decision.

There are a few different versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee to consider: There’s the base version (starting at $36,495), a PHEV version ($60,490) and an extended ‘L’ three-row variant ($39,035). We’ve given alternative options for each in every price range as well as some non-SUVs that you might prefer.

This list looks at alternatives that tick the various boxes the Grand Cherokee does, taking into account size, performance, price, and more. We list them in no particular order. All MSRPs listed do not include fees, destination, or any rebates.

2025 Kia Telluride

Starting MSRP: $36,390

One of the closest competitor to the Jeep Grand Cherokee in terms of size, segment, and practicality, the Telluride features eight-passenger seating as standard for less money than the Grand Cherokee L, which might already be good for some buyers prioritizing seating capacity. The Kia is cheaper and as such isn’t quite as luxurious as the Grand Cherokee is in the top trims, but there’s still a lot of premium to go around.

We think the Grand Cherokee will be better for those prioritizing adventuring and drivers who’d like a hybrid powertrain, which the Kia doesn’t offer in any trim. The Telluride has ever so slightly more legroom in all three rows, although both are pretty tight at the back for taller passengers with just over 30 inches of legroom.

2025 Ford Explorer

Starting MSRP: $40,050

Another SUV similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the Ford Explorer. This three-row SUV is similarly priced to the L variant of the Jeep, and features two potent powertrains that are quicker than the Jeep – especially the six-cylinder. The Jeep is a roomier package inside, and we think it looks more unique than the rather basic Ford Explorer. It’s not a bad-looking car, especially inside, but the Jeep may feel more premium and the hybrid option is a great addition.

2025 Toyota 4Runner

Starting MSRP: $41,270

As Jeep is an off-roading-focused company, we had to include Grand Cherokee competitors that could hit the mud. The 4Runner is a similar package in that, while it is definitely a family car, it can also be a mountain goat when you need it to be. There’s seating for up to seven and a hybrid powertrain, although it’s not a PHEV like the 4xe. There’s also a TRD trim level, similar to the Trailhawk version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. The Jeep Trailhwak trim offers underbody protection, sway bar disconnect and all-terrain tires (along with other features) although this is quite a bit more expensive than Toyota TRD offering.

2025 Mazda CX-90

Starting MSRP: $38,045

While there are lots of images of Jeep Grand Cherokee models hitting the trails and rivers on their website, the Mazda CX-90 is purely focused on road performance and luxury. There are two powertrain options in the Mazda lineup, and the plug-in hybrid variant is about $10k less than the Jeep 4xe PHEV despite similar specs. If you’re not bothered about off-road capability, we’d look at the Mazda as one of the best Jeep Grand Cherokee alternatives. The CX-90 is the eight-seater version of the Mazda CX-70, which is priced similarly to the five-seater Jeep.

“If there’s one thing that Mazda consistently knocks out of the park, it’s interior design, and the CX-90 is a prime example. Especially in the Premium Plus trim, it’s quite simply gorgeous. The interior of the CX-90 is where it really throws in with the luxury car crowd. Take off the badging, and you won’t know that you’re in a Mazda. This isn’t an inexpensive vehicle, with my tester coming in at $59,950 but it looks like it should cost more.”

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

Starting MSRP: $56,700

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can only be had with five seats for around $60,000 – what else can you get with five seats for similar money? The Toyota Land Cruiser. While it’s not a plug-in hybrid, the similarly-priced Japanese SUV is a beast off-road and we love the retro-inspired design. If you’re looking for seven seats, you might be better off with the 4Runner, but the Land Cruiser is an interesting prospect for anyone who doesn’t need the extra flexibility. If reliability is a priority, we’d also choose this over the Grand Cherokee as Jeep hasn’t always had the best reliability and quality record.

2025 Dodge Durango

Starting MSRP: $38,495

Out of all the Grand Cherokee competitors, this is the only one available with an all-American V8. For $10k less than the PHEV Jeep, you can get one of the only V8 midsize seven-seaters on the market in the Dodge Durango. It might not get the same mileage or range as the Jeep, but many customers demand a V8 in their big SUVs for their reliability and performance. This is a Jeep competitor to consider if you’re going to be towing regularly, as the V8 R/T variant can tow 1000 pounds more than the Cherokee with a max capacity of 7,200 lbs.

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe

Starting MSRP: $34,800

The Santa Fe is one of the best cars like the Grand Cherokee for its price. For the same amount of money as the gas-only five-seater Jeep, you can get the hybrid-powered seven-seater Hyundai Santa Fe that’ll be much more efficient and flexible. We also think the Hyundai Santa Fe is a much more modern and sleek-looking car, which may appeal to some people who don’t need off-road readiness. This is a really strong option if you don’t want a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“The 2024 Santa Fe is a great choice for families. It has the room to handle people and cargo along with a range of beautiful interiors. It has an efficient gas engine, but for those who put a priority on fuel economy, there are a limited number of hybrid trims as well. Combine that with a smooth, comfortable ride and pricing under $50,000 even in its most luxurious guise, and the Santa Fe is a win for families.”

2025 Jeep Wagoneer

Starting MSRP: $59,945

Want to stick with a Jeep but don’t want a Grand Cherokee? The Wagoneer comes in at the same price as the PHEV Grand Cherokee and is bigger in every way, including in towing capacity at a huge 10,000 lbs. It might not get the same fuel mileage as the hybrid, but you’ll get more space in exchange for this sacrifice, which may be an important consideration for many. It still retains the rugged-centric characteristics of the Jeep brand and the go-anywhere performance you’d expect.

2025 Kia Carnival

Starting MSRP: $36,990

We never thought we’d call a Kia Carnival minivan a wildcard, but in a world of SUVs, it’s a worthy choice. This is one of the most spacious interiors out of all Jeep Cherokee competitors in all areas, such as third-row legroom. The Kia has a pretty significant four inches more legroom in the back at 35.6 inches, which will be important if you’re carrying multiple adults often. The lower step inside the car and the sliding door may also add an extra amount of flexibility for some who prefer it.

Wildcard: Volvo V90 Cross Country

Starting MSRP: $60,995

Volvo is one of very few automakers still making wagons, and although this doesn’t fall among the more traditional Grand Cherokee competitors, we love this luxury Swedish barge. The V90 Cross Country doesn’t have more than five seats available or a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but the complex turbocharged mild-hybrid engine is efficient enough. The interior is gorgeous and tech-heavy and out of all the Grand Cherokee competitors, we think that this one’s an interesting proposition for the same price as a 4xe Jeep variant.

It’s sleek and happy cruising at speed, but the comfort level and interior aesthetic reminds you there’s no hurry. There’s no pretension to being sporty, so no aggressive scowl on its face or fake vents or harsh angles on the bodywork. In bumpy and corrugated areas, the only way we can think of to get a smoother ride is with an off-road truck with tires featuring a big sidewall. And the V90 CC we drove was on summer tires. We were impressed.”
