Jeep Liberty Generations: All Model Years

Over a 10-year span in the early aughts, two Jeep Liberty generations were produced as a replacement for the original XJ Cherokee. Blending unibody construction with rear-wheel drive, an available manual transmission, and, of course, four-wheel drive, the Jeep Liberty models ranged from basic transportation to fairly rugged off-roader in Renegade guise. 2008-2012 Jeep Liberty KK (2nd Gen)

For second-generation production, Jeep comprehensively updated the Liberty to reflect the boxy styling of its Dodge Nitro badge-engineered corporate cousin. At this point, 2008, only the V6 engine remained and new safety features like side airbags and electronic stability control had become standard. The second-gen Liberty could tow up to 5,000 pounds. For the 2011 update, interior enhancements included a new steering wheel and an updated infotainment system.

A nifty power-operated cloth soft-top, dubbed Sky Slider (and destined for future headaches), joined the list of Liberty options, as did rain-sensing windshield wipers and Bluetooth connectivity. Buyers looking for off-roading capability could go for the Renegade model with its Select-Trac II full-time four-wheel-drive system. Jeep updated the Liberty’s suspension and steering in 2009, then canned it after 2012 to make room for the next-gen Cherokee.

2005-2007 Jeep Liberty KJ (1st Gen) Facelift

Jeep face-lifted the first-gen Liberty in 2005, bringing in a new front end, revised instrument panel graphics, and improved seat comfort. Both gas-powered engines swapped the five-speed stick for a six-speed unit and a new turbocharged common-rail diesel four-pot joined the mix.

By the end of these first-gen Jeep Liberty model years, the 2.4L inline-four gas engine and 2.8L turbodiesel four had both been dropped from the lineup.

2002-2004 Jeep Liberty KJ (1st Gen)

The Jeep Liberty debuted in 2002 as a replacement for the Jeep Cherokee XJ generation. The first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering, it came standard with 16-inch steel wheels, hand-crank windows, and a four-cylinder powertrain making 150 horsepower. For a period of time, this was the tiniest four-door Jeep SUV on sale, until models like the Patriot and Compass arrived. For most of its production run, the first-gen Liberty topped 150,000 annual sales in the United States.

A 210-horsepower V6 was available, as was a four-speed automatic, though a five-speed manual was the standard transmission. The Renegade model was aimed at off-roading and the Limited variant offered niceties like a sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.
