Keep spiders out of homes with five plants they ‘hate’

It’s September, which means autumn has officially arrived bringing with it certain eight-legged home invaders.

Spider season is upon us with reports suggesting thousands of arachnids are poised to infiltrate British homes over the coming weeks, leaving many homeowners on edge.

Yet before reaching for harmful and costly chemical sprays, individuals can choose a safer — and greener — solution to banish these uninvited guests.

The eco-friendly and more stylish approach to tackle spider invasions during the chillier months is houseplants. Plant specialists from Beards & Daisies, a UK-based online houseplant retailer, are revealing everything you need to know to ward off spiders naturally.

Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies and houseplant expert, says: “Many people don’t realise that certain houseplants can keep spiders out.”

Connor Towning, Lead Horticulturist at the same company, explains some aromatic indoor plants don’t just enhance aesthetics, they naturally deter spiders.

“Forget traditional conkers: plants like lavender, peppermint, citronella, and eucalyptus release scents spiders hate, keeping your home far less inviting to them,” says Connor.

There’s a list of five plants that spiders detest which homeowners can position on windowsills, doorways, and corners where arachnids are most likely to emerge.

Best spider-repelling plants and tips for growth

Lavender: Known for its soothing aroma, lavender is a traditional choice for spider-free homes as its potent, sharp floral scent is disagreeable and overpowering to them.

Jo suggests positioning potted lavender near sunny windowsills and ensuring it has well-draining soil. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and more aromatic blooms.

Peppermint: The menthol in peppermint agitates spiders’ senses, causing them to avoid the area. Highly adaptable, peppermint can flourish in pots indoors or in small herb gardens.

Jo recommends watering it moderately and keeping it in bright, indirect light. For an additional spider-deterrent boost, crush a few leaves and place them around corners or create a simple peppermint spray.

Citronella: Renowned for warding off mosquitoes, citronella also deters spiders.

Jo advises placing it in a bright spot and trimming it regularly. Its fresh leaves can also be used in DIY sprays for a double benefit.

Eucalyptus: Both fresh eucalyptus leaves and essential oils naturally repel spiders as they dislike the strong scent.

Jo suggests cultivating dwarf eucalyptus varieties in bright, well-ventilated areas. Even snipping a few stems and placing them around the home adds fragrance and function.

Rosemary and Lemon Balm: Aromatic herbs like rosemary and lemon balm subtly repel insects due to their potent aroma.

Jo recommends using medium-sized pots with well-draining soil and rotating them occasionally for even light exposure. The scents of these herbs intensify when the leaves are gently rubbed or crushed.

For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, dried herbs or essential oil sprays derived from these plants can also be used to naturally deter spiders from your home.

“Integrating these plants into your home is a win-win,” adds Jo. “You’re creating a healthier indoor environment, enjoying the benefits of greenery, and reducing the need for harsh chemicals, while still keeping spiders out.”
