As autumn creeps in and evening temperatures drop, many households start looking for ways to stay warm through the night without cranking up central heating. The Silentnight Comfort Control electric blanket could help beat the chill, and it’s currently on sale at Amazon, with prices starting from £21.64.
The blanket is available in multiple sizes — single, double, king and super king — and is made from fleece fabric (100% polyester), which is described by Silentnight as “super snuggly”. It’s designed to go on top of the mattress and act as under-sheet heating.
Amazon has reduced the price of the single from £30 to £21.64, the king from £42.99 to £37.99, and the superking from £55 to £50. The double size is still priced at £30.99 but we’ve also found it JD Williams for £22.
The design includes elastic straps at the base to help secure the blanket around the mattress and has three heat settings via a side controller. The maximum power draw is about 90 watts on the highest setting, which, under average electricity rates, works out at around 3p per hour. Lower settings use less power. Silentnight says it heats up in matter of minutes.
It is designed to prevent overheating while in use but it is recommended to switch off before going to sleep and to avoid using continuously at a the highet temperature.
It has almost 7,000 five star reviews on Amazon, with one user writing: “Game changer for cold nights. I honestly don’t know how I managed without this electric blanket before. It fits nicely onto our double bed using the corner straps—super easy to set up and stays in place without bunching up. Heats up pretty fast too, so the bed’s warm by the time I get in. I was a bit unsure about safety at first, but the overheat protection gives peace of mind, and I’ve had no issues. It’s also machine washable, which is a big plus for me—I’ve already washed it once and it came out fine. It doesn’t feel bulky under the sheet either, just soft and comfortable.”
Another customer described the blanket as being “incredibly cheap for the power that it produces”. However, some downsides were noted. One user mentioned it doesn’t cover the whole bed and may leave cooler edges. Also, the plastic connection point and cable are placed on one side of the bed, which some commented as being uncomfortable.
Each blanket size does come up quite a bit smaller than its mattress counterpart. For example, the double size is listed at (L)135cm x (W)120cm, where as a standard double mattress measures (L)190cm x (W)135cm. The king and super king sizes are larger but still fall short of some mattress dimensions.
When it comes to cleaning, the blanket is machine washable once the controller is removed and it has a 3-year warranty via Silentnight once registered.
