Money-saving expert Martin Lewis revealed the two household appliances that are raking up high energy bills.
When it comes to keeping warm in the winter, the heating will need to go on, but this is when it becomes wise to save energy elsewhere.
According to Martin Lewis, one of the most energy-draining appliances is the tumble dryer.
“You could save by avoiding using the tumble dryer where possible, as it’s one of the most energy-hungry appliances there is,” Martin Lewis noted.
While the option to dry clothes outside becomes slim due to wet and cold weather, using an airer indoors could save you money.
Mr Lewis elaborated: “You’re typically paying up to £1 a load, so drying clothes on an airer indoors can heavily cut costs.
“The Energy Saving Trust reckons you could save £50 a year if you never use it.”
Just remember to place the wet laundry in a well ventilated room to help prevent higher humidity in the home, which could increase the risk of mould.
Another energy-sapping appliance is the oven, which can take time to heat up the space inside of it and the food.
Instead of the oven, Mr Lewis recommended using either an air-fryer or the microwave. Mr Lewis explained: “Air-fryers are essentially a compact oven, with a fan circulating hot air at high speed to cook food.
“This means they don’t take as long to heat up and the small compartment helps speed up cooking time considerably”
Mr Lewis added: ” If you can use your microwave instead of the oven to cook certain foods, do.
“They use less energy than ovens because they only heat the food, not the air around it.”
