To make this JDM dream a reality, Toyota joined forces with BMW. This controversial partnership ruffled a few feathers, sparking a heated debate that continues even now. However, Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda—a master driver with gasoline running through his veins—personally oversaw the project, making sure it was still a Supra at heart.

Wrapped in an intoxicating design, the 2020 Toyota Supra Launch Edition featured a scrumptious red leather interior (Renaissance Red models wear black leather to avoid being overbearing) that practically begged to be touched. Carbon fiber accents whispered of high-performance pedigree, while the numbered production badge transformed each vehicle into a collectible piece of automotive art. The Supra’s power plant, BMW’s intoxicating B58 engine found in the BMW Z4, is a masterpiece of modern engineering: a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six. As mentioned earlier, purists kicked up a fuss about this, believing the Supra should not be infected by foreign parts, but it’s not all bad. Paired with the legendary ZF eight-speed automatic transmission—a unit so razor-sharp and intuitive it makes you forget about manual gearboxes—this powertrain is exhilarating.

The 2020 Mk5 Supra sprints to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.1 seconds when launched. On top of that, it’s near 50/50 weight distribution and the rear-wheel-drive setup makes it the ultimate drift car as it slides through bends. Interestingly, the Z4 had more power, despite using the same engine. When we asked Toyota chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, why this was, during our first drive review of the 2020 GR Supra, we were surprised to hear that a more powerful Supra didn’t improve lap times. However, the following model year got a power boost to 382 hp, which cut the 0-60 time down to 3.9 seconds (with the automatic transmission). Since then, an underappreciated four-pot Supra was added to the range, as was a manual transmission.

When new, the 2020 Toyota Supra 3.0 Premium Launch Edition cost $55,250. It seemed pricey, but remember it was an icon revived. And worth it. Usually, special edition or collector cars hold their value extremely well, and that’s the case here. Previous auctions on Bring A Trailer show these Supra models being sold for as much as $57,500. The highest price was for an immaculate example with only 21 miles on the clock; the average selling price was $49,604.

Almost $50,000 for a going-on five-year-old sports car seems steep, but a brand new Supra 3.0, without the number badge or President’s signature, costs $56,250. That said, the new model has more power and is faster. Choosing between a used Launch Edition or a more powerful 2025 Toyota GR Supra will ultimately come down to whether having one of the first 1,500 Mk5 Toyota Supra’s is significant or not.

2024 Toyota GR Supra GT4 100th Edition Tribute

The GR Supra GT4 100th Edition was revealed in 2023 and limited to 100 units for Europe. Available in a striking Plasma Orange color, it was designed to celebrate Toyota reaching the 100-unit production milestone of the GR Supra GT4 race car. Black alloy wheels, a carbon fiber dashboard insert, and matte block alloy wheels were added to this special Supra to make it stand out.

2022 Toyota Supra A91-CF Edition

The A91-CF edition Toyota Supra basically adds a body kit, but it was limited to 600 units, making it a rare sports car that costs Porsche 718 Cayman money. A functional carbon fiber body kit widens that stance and adds downforce for better handling at high speed. Special edition 19-inch matte-black wheels and red calipers catch the eye outside, while a distinct red and black Alcantara and leather interior stuns inside. All units of this Supra were limited for sale in North America.

2024 Toyota Supra A91 Anniversary Edition

A black and orange Mk5 Toyota Supra was designed for its 45th anniversary. It pays tribute to the mk4 supra, resembling the one seen in the first The Fast and The Furious movie. Again, this is a limited production with just 900 Toyota GR Supra 45th Anniversary Editions for the US market. Aggressively styled with a huge, manually adjustable wing spoiler, matte-black wheels, black GR brake calipers, and black stripe along the side of the car with Supra logo cutout, it looks the part.
