Ford’s Latest Crime-Fighting Cruiser Is Here To Serve And Protect

Ford has been aiding police and law enforcement for a remarkable 75 years. While we all know of icons like the Crown Victoria, the Blue Oval has a history of building cars fit for police duty. Now, the latest iteration of its Special Service Vehicles (SSV) lineup has arrived in the form of the 2025 Ford Expedition SSV, joining the F-150, F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Police Interceptor Utility (based on the Ford Explorer).

Designed to support law enforcement, fire departments, and other government agencies, the Expedition SSV is available as both standard- and long-wheelbase variants, the latter based on the Expedition Max. This makes it one of the most versatile members of the Ford SSV lineup and is the second generation Expedition to bear the SSV badge.

A Proven Workhorse Ready For Duty

As the largest SSV vehicle in the lineup, the Expedition leverages Ford’s potent EcoBoost V6 with a 3.5-liter displacement. Unchanged from its specification as a passenger SUV, this outputs 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft, which in SSV form are sent exclusively to a 4×4 system (with low range) through Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox.

The abundance of torque gives the Expedition SSV a towing capacity of up to 9,600 lbs (9,000 lbs in Expedition Max SSV) when equipped with the load-leveling bar.

Its versatility doesn’t just come down to its brute strength, though. In standard form, the Expedition SSV is a two-row SUV with five seats, but the Max variant retains the third row of seating and the customer SUV’s Power Recline functionality. The seats are all cloth upholstered and the floor is vinyl, making for easy wiping down when off-duty. Various power points throughout the cabin also support emergency services on the move to ensure devices remain fully powered when needed.

Unique to this segment, the 2025 Expedition SSV features the new Ford Split Gate, allowing the top 75% of the tailgate to open independently of the lower quarter for quick access. The lower tailgate, meanwhile, has a carrying capacity of up to 500 lbs for supporting heavy-duty gear.

The Latest In Tech To Serve And Protect

Law enforcement relies heavily on the latest technology, which the Expedition SSV has by the bucketload. It starts with the standard 24-inch panoramic display replacing the traditional gauge cluster, but for times when an illuminated cabin would alert those performing untoward deeds of the presence of law enforcement, a ‘Dark Car’ mode switches off all interior illumination for those stealthy stakeouts. There’s also a nifty Police Accessory Independent Timed-Release Output (PAITRO) to prevent unauthorized access to cargo. Speaking of, up to 108.5 cubic feet are available behind the front seats, with 60.8 cubes behind the second row.

The Expedition SSV doesn’t just inherit tech from the passenger car, but also debuts a few new features of its own. These include Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking 2.2 and Intersection Assist 2.2. PCA with AEB 2.2. This detects oncoming traffic and applies the brakes preemptively to reduce the severity of an impact. These systems are in addition to the usual suspects like blind-spot monitoring, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, among others.

Order banks are now open for the 2025 Expedition SSV, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of Ford supplying law enforcement vehicles in 2025. Since 1950, Ford has taken some of its most iconic vehicles and made them fit for police duty, and it has no plans to stop anytime soon.
