Upon arrival in 2006, the Jeep Compass was positioned as an entry-point for new Jeep buyers to the brand. These early Jeep Compass model years featured a pair of inline-four powertrains and a front-wheel-drive (FWD) architecture with the availability of all-wheel drive (AWD) and a five-speed manual. Originally positioned between the tiny Renegade and Cherokee, over two Jeep Compass generations, it has emerged as the sole small-sized crossover in the automaker’s lineup.

2022 – 2025 Jeep Compass MP/552 (2nd Gen) Facelift
A 2022 facelift brought a mildly restyled Jeep Compass exterior along with a more modern interior look. New technology options like a 10.1-inch central touchscreen and fully-digital gauge cluster also joined the Compass lineup.

2017 – 2021 Jeep Compass MP/552 (2nd Gen)
For the first half of the 2017 model year, the first-gen Compass was sold unchanged with the all-new second-gen Compass arriving for the latter half of 2017. From the Tigershark series, this new 2.4L inline-four was rated for 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a nine-speed automatic, it sent power to the front wheels with AWD as an option. With the new Trailhawk model, an Active Drive Low AWD system offering a 20:1 crawl ratio, beefy tires, a raised suspension, and a higher ground clearance were available.

2011 – 2017 Jeep Compass MK49 (1st Gen) Facelift
A 2011 facelift ushered in Jeep Compass looks more closely aligned with the Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time. Powertrains carried over, but Jeep’s Trail Rated badge and a more aggressive AWD system joined the lineup. Part of the Freedom Drive II package, this system added more credibility to the Compass’ billing as a genuine Jeep off-roader.

- CVT with low-range setting
- Skid plates
- Tow hooks
Under the skin, a revised suspension and steering tune promised better Compass handling and the cabin was updated to included new soft-touch points and higher quality materials.

2007 – 2010 Jeep Compass MK49 (1st Gen)
Launched with the aim of offering SUV functionality in a compact car-like package, the 2007 Jeep Compass was built in the same plant as the period Dodge Neon. A choice of a 158-horsepower 2.0L four-cylinder or 2.4L variant making 172 hp was joined by standard FWD and the option for AWD with Lock mode.
The Jeep brand is on a product offensive, and will continue to grow with new offerings like the Jeep Compass that leverage Jeep’s legendary 4×4 leadership.

Trim lines consisted of a base Sport and Limited with simple standard content, by today’s standards, like hand-crank windows, four speakers, cloth upholstery, and alloy wheels. Niceties like a sunroof and heated front seats were available on these early Jeep crossovers that struck more of hatchback look than off-roading SUV the brand was known for.
