Porsche Thinks The Macan EV Is Fast Enough… For Nowh

The typical Porsche model for its products is for new arrivals and updated variants to get sportier and sportier, and sometimes to the point that you get the utterly mind-bendingly fast Cayenne Turbo Coupe GT. Everyone knows Porsche builds insane 911 models, but this is a 650-horsepower SUV that corners like previous-generation 911 owners wish their cars could. However, according to comments made to the media via CarExpert by vice president for the Macan product line at Porsche AG, Jörg Kerner, that won’t be the case for the new Macan Electric. When asked about T and GTS versions down the line, he says there are “no plans” to grow the Macan Electric lineup.

“I think the Turbo is [already] a big stretch between daily usable and usable on the track… in this car you can see what we did for performance,” Kerner said, “At the moment we have four models, and I think the spread is okay. So at the moment, these are the models, and I think the Turbo is out of range for every competitor.”

Porsche Likes To Expand Ranges, And It’s Open To The Same Here

When a car is still new, automakers don’t tend to want to give buyers a reason to wait and talk about future versions. Kerner seems to backtrack a bit, though, saying, “Look at the combustion version [of the Macan]; we are quite famous for bringing many, many different versions to have the best offer for any kind of customer. I think there will be something more in the future.”

This could be taken to mean further models might extend the luxury aspect of the Macan Electric, but that’s not the Porsche way. The Porsche way is to make models that go faster and corner even better.

Porsche May Respond To Rivals Who See A Gap

Initially, the new model debuted with the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Then an entry-level two-wheel-drive model was announced, and the Macan 4S was to slot between the 4 and Turbo. To Kerner’s point, though, the Macan Electric starts at $75,300 and makes 355 horsepower with the ability to hit 60 mph from zero in 5.4 seconds. The range, currently, tops out with the Macan Turbo Electric at $105,300 while making 630 hp and clearing zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

5 Things I Learned From A Quick Spin In The Porsche Macan EV

The Macan is a fabulous but pricey EV.

It certainly is, in Porsche terms, a good lineup but the 4S Electric, the one below the Turbo, has 509 hp – 120 hp less than the Turbo. That leads us to think that when BMW or Mercedes, or an outlier like Genesis, launches a genuine competitor in size, sportiness, and luxury, Porsche will fill that gap. As for something that takes performance beyond the Macan Turbo Electric, it’s hard to believe Porsche will be able to resist.
